// the short answer
We watched 21 videos from 18 reviewers. Want the bigger thrill? Get the Focus RS: more midrange shove, and all-wheel drive that helps the car turn. Driving it every day? Get the Civic Type R. It rides better, shifts better and holds more, and reviewers don't split on that.
Counts are head-to-head calls: each time a reviewer picked one car over the other. “On ratings” means nobody made that call directly; the car named rates higher in its own reviews.

№ 01
Performance
Focus RS wins5–0clear
Focus RS is faster in a straight line.
№ 02
Handling
Type R wins5–1clear
Sharper and more precise turn-in.
Where reviewers split. Handling is the one real split. Five calls credit the Civic's flatter, sharper front-drive chassis, but EverydayDriver says the Ford rotates on its centerline in a way the Civic can't. Call it precision versus adjustability. Fun leans Focus six to three, and the Civic's three are all about the controls: TheStraightPipes on its shifter and rev-match, and Zygrene finding the Ford's shifter, steering and seating position "way off." Value is thin. No reviewer priced these two head to head, and the per-car value quotes come from different markets and model years, so treat that category as unscored.

// the long version
“Two ways to spend 300-plus turbo horsepower: the FK8 Civic Type R is the precise front-driver you could commute in, the Focus RS Mk3 is the all-wheel-drive hooligan that beats you up for the thrill.
The Focus wins the shove and the grin. Its 2.3 EcoBoost has the extra midrange torque Drive.com.au felt as "punchy," all five performance head-to-heads go its way, and the rear-biased all-wheel drive lets it rotate "right on its centerline in a way the Civic just can't" (EverydayDriver). Fun goes its way six calls to three: Wheels Australia says it "still delivers the highest of highs," Carfection calls it "slightly unhinged," and Regular Car Reviews thinks it's "too fast for the real world."
The Civic wins the precision and everything around it. The K20C1 makes its peak power at 6,500 rpm and keeps pulling past 7,000, TheStraightPipes rate its shifter and auto rev-match the best of the bunch, and five of six handling calls credit its flatter, more planted chassis — Matt Maran felt it "hunkers down" where the Ford "just kind of grips." Then it runs away with daily drivability, fifteen calls to none: the better ride, friendlier seats, a lower driving position, more back seat and more trunk. Doug DeMuro calls ride quality its biggest advantage over a Focus that's "crashy and bumpy."
Pick the Focus for the drive you planned; pick the Civic for all the ones you didn't.
